Spring-it

Hmnn, well, didn't follow my own curiosity very well. I've not tried Heronswood, but we'll be getting some baby 'Leonard Messel' magnolias from bluestone.com. Also, ordered some 'casa blanca' lilies from Park Seed co. and picked up a couple of cryptomeria at Lowes.

This year, I intend to stick with previous successes or things I've seen flourish well locally. Was rather a downer last year with such drought to see the landscape suffer so. Hopefully this summer will be a shade less intense.

At Lowes, was sorely tempted by the baskets of summer flowers they already have out. But, now it has gotten so cold again and I'm rather pleased to not have given in to such base desires (ie, bright geraniums and petunias).

Spring is the best time of year! All the promise of life and lush green to come.

Planting purchases

I get all kinds of catalogues, emails, whatever-have-yous advertising plants and garden accessories (oooh, sexy!). There are a number of quite expensive and interesting options out there (and fifty times as many cheap and dull ones).

Because we have such a peculiar piece of property, it is a real challenge to grow interesting creatures. I find myself starting many perennials in large pots for a season or two. That seems to help them until they develop a decent enough root system to get anywhere in our dry, clay, thoroughly tree-root-filled woodland.

Even some of the really neat nurseries send mostly bare root product. I have been wanting to try out Heronswood. They have several interesting looking choices and their product seems to frequently ship already in some kind of medium.

As a side note, George Bell who does their blog has my interest piqued over Bailey's book (of course, Amazon doesn't seem to have any so I might actually have to look around for this one).

If you've had a go with them, let me know what you think. Of course, you could always just send me that 2007 collection of hellebores I've been longing for:)Better send along some Soil Moist too!

A Thought

What is it? An observation? A meditation? I don't think it's a poem, but it doesn't really have the structure of a proper story either.
I call it:
The Thief

Today the wind sounds like a gentle ocean or the echo in a shell.
Spruce branches wave their shadows up and back across the wall.
For a moment everything goes still and silent
Then the dancing begins again.

Two days ago I closed up early
The sun, setting across the lake shone brightly through
And the silhouette of a squirrel danced across the curtain folds.
What a fun little acrobat, tirelessly performing and
Quite unaware that the agile leaps towards our garden should be so admired.
You’ve well earned your dinner little friend,
Come back again soon.

Houston

It's great when you hear about someone using something they love to make a name for themselves. There's John Milkovisch who's beer can clad house is being turned into a museum.
How about the art car festival? Here are pictures from 2007 - even though it's no car, I'm pretty impressed by the one ton chopper.
I've never even been vaguely tempted by Texas, but maybe Houston has something to offer after all.

Internet brownies...

...can be gross!

These ones just came out looking like vomit (not helped by the mini-marshmallows we decided to add to the hot cocoa tasting batter). They actually taste like caramel candy. I think that if we're hungover in the morning, then the culprit is with this sugar (spoken like a true lush). Argh, my own worst enemy and all of that.

The dismantling of a God

Poor Clovis, he used to get by on his looks. He remembers the evenings in Boston where he was the #1 accessory for various lovely ladies. They would pass him around and feed him little bits of their dinners. Ah, that was the life. Look how the mighty have fallen! See how Ernie laughs from his high up throne.

It's so easy

Rob makes a decent point in this entry to his Demonbaby blog regarding our enthusiasm for cutting down on the insanity that is scientology while at the same time mindlessly taking on the fecal ideals of christianity, the great spaghetti monster, whatever.
His descriptions sound so familiar (anyone who knows Curt has heard these same arguments for years).
It's kind of sad that he has to even discuss 'belief' (whatever that may be), but apparently that's all we care about from our potential leaders anymore. What a bunch of lazy cry-baby's we are.
